The illusive goddess known as the Veiled Mistress is a manifestation of the realm of souls. A dark and unknowable figure who peers into the material plane through its darkest shadows and watches. She is drawn to the lonely, the aimless, and the lost. Often the dark figure of a woman veiled in shadow can be seen just after one has died, especially if the death is surrounded by the traits she seeks.
Those touched by the Veiled Mistress are cursed to bear shadowlost children, and at some point in a shadowlost's early twenties, she appears to them in a moment of solitude and embraces them into the realm of souls, never to be seen alive again.

It is said that the Veiled Mistress claims the souls of the dead who wander the earth after death. Those denied their afterlife. However, some souls cling tightly to the earth and become living shadows, ghosts with broken minds who lash out against the living. This is one of the many reasons why the Mistress is seen as a frightening eldritch being, and she is not a sanctioned goddess of the Theocracy. However, the inquisition very rarely acts on evidence of worshipping her, as this worship is mainly harmless.
