Personal history

Istil Sammar knew he wasn't like other drow. He didn't revel in the treachery and duplicitous ways of his people. He longed for a new life but knew there was little chance of that changing. He did his duty and kept his feelings to himself. He took work protecting caravans and raiding enemy villages. One of the raids even took him to the surface of Faerûn. His lot in life was sorry and almost hopeless. Being under the eyes of nobles, and worse, drow priestesses of Llolth was a miserable existence. He still kept hoping to find a way out. He never thought it would take him back to the surface world and freedom. Istil signed on to a caravan headed to the town of Shadowdale. Once a drow stronghold, Shadowdale was now a peaceful village, but it's strategic location was highly valued and the drow hoped to exploit this by allying with a group of humans who sought to take over the dale. Unfortunately for his superiors, the forces arrayed against them proved too strong and the caravan was attacked and destroyed.
Surviving the battle, though wounded, was Istil's chance at escape and a new life. He wandered the elven wood at night, avoiding notice as best he could. The forest was so different than the endless caverns of the Underdark. Coming to the surface was a shock to Istil. Having only come once before, during a raid and at night, he couldn't really see the beauty of the surface world. It awoke something deep inside him. Something that rebelled against the treacherous nature of his people.
His first time seeing the moon rise over the forest of Cormanthor was the night he thought he'd succumb to his wounds. As the full moon shined down upon him, a female drow, naked and dancing with a sword in a moonlit glade appeared to him. He lay on the soft grass and watched her, thinking to himself this was a pleasant sight to behold in his final moments. She began to sing of Eilistraee and he felt as though his soul was departing, then all went black. He awoke some time later healed and refreshed. This priestess, for he knew she was not a mere dream, had healed his wounds. She beckoned him to follow her deeper into the elven wood. She led him to a tree village filled with other drow, as well as moon elves and half-elves. They welcomed Istil and told him of their goddess and her plight to save all drow from the Spider Queen.

Likes: The feel of sunshine on his face. The smell of grass.
Dislikes: Istil is still unsure of large spaces open to the sky. He usually has his hood pulled forward to hide the sky from his vision.

Istil judges people by their character. He knows most people have heard terrible tales of the drow and he knows people could fear him and possibly attack him because of that fear. In cases like this, he tries to disarm them or simply run if he is out numbered.
