Guatemala

Guatemala is a country on the Gulf of Honduras, bordered to the north Mexico, to the northeast by Belize, to the east by Honduras, and to the southeast by El Salvador. Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America, and the 4th most populous country in North America overall. Its capital is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City, the most populous city in Central America.

It was part of the Maya Empire until the 16th century, when it was colonised by Spain. It gained independance in 1821, but became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1923, before finally becoming an independant nation once more in 1841.

In the early 20th century, The United States of America began backing a series of dictators sympathetic to American corporate interests. The country succeeded in overthrowing its dictator in 1944, ushering in a decade of social and economic reforms, but in 1954, a U.S. backed military coup reinstated a dictatorship, leading to a more than three decades of civil war, which included massacres and attempted genocide of the Maya people. A peace of negotiated in 1996, assisted by the United Nations, allowing for the establishment of democratic elections.
