The Enchantress Amora discovered her Human lover had been cheating on her. Overcome with rage, she flooded the kingdom in which he lived.
While he hunted Amora, Thor sent Odin's steeds Smokemare and Stormbringer to the kingdom to rescue the stranded survivors, as they were the only things strong enough to swim through the enchanted floodwaters. However, once they had been saved, the humans, who had been trapped and starving for weeks, killed and ate the horses.
Thor turned to Loki for help, as he feared Odin would punish him for taking the horses without permission. Loki took the bones of the horses and used magic to create the eight-legged steed Sleipnir.
