Character Creation

This campaign will be utilizing both Discord and Roll20 to facilitate play. The below instructions are targeted at creating your Roll20 charcter sheet. It is recommend that players check out the #character-creation channel on Discord for more information on character applications and instructions on setting up the Discord bots.

1. Claim a Blank Character Sheet

Within the blank character sheet folder on Roll20 there should be a number of character sheets named "Blank Character Sheet". These sheets can be edited by anyone, so pick one and change the name to something other than "Blank Character Sheet". This way no one else will edit the sheet while you are creating your character.

2. Think of a Concept

You have sailed from distant lands to arrive on these scenic coasts. Drawn by the allure of the Tower of Ascension. Prior to making your character in earnest, it is recommended that you take some time to come up with a character concept. What was it about this region that called to you? was it fame, fortune, knowledge or the promise of the tower granting a wish? If your character is seeking a wish, what are they wishing for?

3. Choose a Race

Given the influx of adventurers, the town of Verdigras is no stranger to unique and fantastic races. review the race options available on http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/ and confirm approval on the #content-rulings chat in the Discord. Once you have chosen a race, add the appropriate racial bonus and features to your character sheet.   Players are permitted to customize the stat bonuses received from their race. When choosing this option you may disregard the normal stat bonuses granted by your race and instead gain a +2 bonus to a single stat and a +1 bonus to another.

4. Choose a Background

There are plenty of backgrounds backgrounds to choose from on http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/, with each conveying the sort of life your character lived prior to their arrival in Verdigras. Choose one background from the list of "Common Backgrounds".   If there are aspects of your chosen background that you would like to change to better fit your personal story, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds.

5. Choose a Class

This step is probably the most important one you will make when it comes to determining your play experience in D&D. This is because a majority of your features you get, and will get, come from your class. Your class even determines when you get ability score improvements. Choosing your class will also determine what ability scores you will want your main focus to be when the time comes to generate ability scores. When choosing a class, please review the #content-rulings chat on Discord to confirm allowed classes and sub-classes.   If your class has the spell casting feature, be sure to add known spells to your list. Spells may be dragged from the information tab in the Roll20 sidebar (the i icon) to your spells for ease.   Once you have picked your class this will determine your saving throw proficiencies, skill proficiencies, health, and equipment. These will be covered later on this page.

6. Roll your character stats

Use the !randchar command in the #bot-rolls chat on the discord. This will provide six stat values. Players may either keep these rolled stat values to assign to each stat as desired, or they may instead choose to use 27 point buy. The point buy website can be found HERE.

7. Proficiencies

Both your Class and Background will provide you with proficiencies for saving throws, skills, and tools. Note the proficiencies received and choose desired proficiencies when prompted.
Note on Tool Proficiencies: This campaign uses a homebrewed crafting and gathering system and some tools have been renamed or removed. Please refer to the list of tools within the #character-creation channel and confirm that any tool proficiencies gained are chosen from that list. If a background or class provides a tool proficiency that isn't on the list, you may choose a different one of your choice.
  In addition, players may choose an bonus tool proficiency of their choice during character creation.

8. Equipment

Characters begin with the starting equipment and gold provided by their Class and Background. Tracking this information must be done in Discord using the !bag and !coins commands. You can optionally track this information on your roll20 sheet as well, but GMs will be utilizing the inventory and coins tracked in Discord. See item #X on the #character-creation Discord channel for instructions on how to do this.
Given the expensive nature of firearms, players may not choose a firearm as part of their character's starting class equipment.

Note: Characters do not necessarily start with all of the tools they are proficient in. Please play special attention to which tools are provided as part of your Class and Background.

9. Health and Hit Dice

Hit Points are maxed for first level, then rolled for each level following. HP rolls below the average (as listed below) are ignored and instead the average value is used.

Average value per die size:

D6 = 3 (Sorcerer, Wizard)
D8 = 4 (Artificer, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock)
D10 = 5 (Fighter, Paladin, Ranger)
D12 = 6 (Barbarian)

10. Finish your Character

At this point your character sheet should be completed from a mechanical perspective, but there is a lot more to your character than just mechanics. Take time to give your character a name, and breathe life into them by filling out the sheet's personality and backstory sections. Each Background has some prompts that can be used for inspiration if required. On your character sheet there are also fields to regard physical details such as age, weight, height and appearance, please fil these out.

11. Add a Portrait

The first tab of the roll20 character sheet, Bio & Info, can be seen by all players and not just the GMs. This is a good area to put some basic information about your character: name, age, appearance, gender pronouns, a brief description, etc.   Also on the Bio & Info tab a picture can be uploaded, players should find or draw a picture of their character and upload it to this spot in the character sheet.

12. Setup your Character on Discord

Your character is complete on Roll20, but there is still some additional actions required on Discord in order to get your character ready for adventure. Please follow steps 10-16 within the #character-creation channel. Once those steps are complete, all that remains is getting your character approved.       Best of luck on your adventures!
