Calimshan
Calimshan is an ancient nation immediately to the south of Tethyr. While the country hosts a variety of terrain, it is most famous for the Calim that makes up the western third of the nation and is where the capital, Calimport, can be found. Calimshan is a wealthy country, and is found at the center of several trade routes, including controlling water access between the Sword Coast and the Sea of Fallen Stars (and thus all the interior nations that border it). Calimport and Waterdeep, the so-called City of Coins, compete for being the trade capital of Faerun.
Calimshan is widely known for being a place of magic, where magic items can be purchased readily, and magic arts are studied intently. This stands in stark contrast to Tethyr's northern neighbor, Amn, where magic is strictly controlled and regulated. It is fairly common to find would be adepts of magic travelling south along the Trade Way from the northern countries to study in Calimshan.
Calimshan is also known for is prevelance of Djinni and Effreeti. These creatures are seen with fear and distrust by the human population (which is what makes up 95% of the overall population). Around a century ago, two powerful genies called Calim and Memnon fought a war, transforming the entire nation into a battlefield. Both disappeared without explanation about fifty years ago, leaving the human population largely in bondage to the Genasi warlord that fought in their place. This continued until 1489 DR, when a prophet helped the human populations to overthrow their Genasi masters in what became known as the Glorious Revolution. Having been freed, Slavery was outlawed in Calimshan, and trade and wealth has returned to the country in abundance, heralding a new golden age for the nation.
