They left to save Dave from being drafted.

In order for Dave to work in the small Texas town they gave him a false identity, a child who died at birth, who otherwise would have been Dave’s age. Because of this someone thought they could legitimately draft him and send him to fight for the USA, in Vietnam. They left Earth to prevent this.
