Bakers Lung

Bakers Lung is a long term disorder of the respiratory system of humans & humanoids who use clay / stone ovens to bake bread. It causes the respiratory system of them to dry out causing what effectively is a form of COPD. The person finds it hard to breathe, and reduces the capacity for them to get a breath. It also affects the throat, mouth, and nose as well drying out the mucosal membranes of these parts too.

Causes

The airways are dried out by the heat when opening & closing of the ovens used to bake bread. The heat given off dries out the layers of the mouth, throat, nose, and eventually the lungs.

Symptoms

Shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, constant tickly throat, some slight nasal blockage, dry cough, some damage to taste & smell.

Treatment

None. The only way to avoid this is not work as a baker.

Prognosis

The long term damage is irreparable if in constant contact with bakery ovens, and many recover if only in short contact with them. Long term damage from this profession is a cause of COPD, as the lining of the lungs are severely damaged by the heat, which effectively cooks them. This causes a slow uncomfortable decline and increases risks to other diseases to the airways, like pneumonia, influenza, rhinovirus, and coronavirus.

Affected Groups

Bakers, usually in major European factions.

Prevention

The main way to prevent this is to avoid the types of ovens used in bread making. This is obviously easier said than done, so masks can be used that would hopefully dispel the heat before being inhaled. The only other option is to use magic, though some side effects here involving heat may make this harder.
