Rare Creature. The Brownie is both hard to find and hard to recognize. To see it first requires a DC 16 Arcana check, and to see it requries a DC 12 Perception check to be made at night, when the Brownie is active.
Invisibility. The Brownie magically turns invisible until it attacks or casts a spell, or until its concentration ends (as if concentrating on a spell). Any equipment the Brownie wears or carries is invisible with it. This ability cannot be used again until the Brownie completes a short or long rest.
Lightfoot. The Brownie moves in a veil of shadows and silence for, through which it must hold its breath. During this time, it leaves no tracks nor other traces of passage, and cannot be tracked except by magical means. This ability ends after six rounds, or if the Brownie takes a breath. This ability required 1d8 rounds after each use to be used again.
Mastercraft. If the Brownie is currently being fed, it will take this action during every short or long rest the party takes to do any of the following up to 4 times total. This action does not have to be exclusive to the person the Brownie is bound to, if it has been bound.

  • Repair - The Brownie repairs a piece of armor, equipment, clothing, or weapon completely.
  • Mend - (Only usable when bound) During a short rest, the Brownie will stitch up and treat minor injuries, healing a party member for an additional 1d6hp
  • Gather - The Brownie will gather rations from the wilderness. 1d4 party members gain an additional day's worth of rations.
  • Organized - Organize and categorize all party member's belongings, allowing them to pack up camp in one round.
Boggart. If the Brownie goes 3 days without being fed, it will begin to do the following during short and long rests. If the Brownie goes an additional 4 days without being fed, it will leave unless it is bound to someone in the party.
  • Damage - The Brownie thins a piece of armor (-2AC), dulls a bladed weapon (-2dmg), or makes brittle a piece of equipment(50% chance of breaking when used).
  • Scatter - The Brownie unloads the party member's backpacks, scattering the belongings about the area.
  • Chill - The Brownie will put out fires, poke large holes in blankets, and otherwise take action to make the party cold and interrupt their rest.
  • Itchy - The Brownie will scatter prickly bits of plant matter inside the party's clothing. Party members must make a DC 8 Wisdom save during their next action, on a failed save they lose their action to an irresistible itching in their shirt.
Bait Creature. Baiting beasts or monsters is only done if the Brownie has gone 8 or more days without tribute, and is bound to someone. Use the tables below to determine how many and which creatures are attracted, using the table fitting the environment the party is in.

Reactions

Bugger Off. If approached for direct combat, the Brownie will use its Invisibility as well as Lightfoot special abilities at the same time and flee. If it is bound to a traveler, it will flee into their backpack; otherwise simply running away. It can only be tracked through magical means.

Brownies, also called Gruagach by some, are small fey that are driven by a desire to help people. They stand between 4 and 9 inches in height, and their appearance varies greatly. While some resemble little old men, others may look like chubby toddlers with long noses and pointed ears, or a mixed batch of woodland creatures in humanoid form. They can have whiskers, and no noses, long noses, webbed feet, and any number of oddities about them. These creatures are incredibly difficult to spot, should one be present in the home or as a tag-a-long on any travelers. First, one must know to look for the tiny footprints they leave, and signs of the food they take as tribute. Then they must be perceptive enough to find them at night when they busy themselves with cleaning, maintaining, and repairing anything they find that needs it.     These small creatures, while typically found in homes, can now and then make a home out of an adventurers backpack. They take sweet things, berries, and breads as a payment of sorts for their services. Though they fully understand that the traveler they've made a home of hasn't agreed to this, and failure to find their payment for several days will cause them to grow mischievous for a time, before leaving to make a home elsewhere. However, should any traveler willingly give them this tribute of food a pact is formed between the two. The Brownie is from that day onward bound to the traveler, until one of their lives comes to an end. If tribute is continued daily, they can be the most faithful of servants; maintaining all that they can to near masterful quality. Should this tribute fail to be delivered for more than a few days, however, they begin to grow vindictive. Many consider the actions they take to belong to a creature known as a Boggart, but it is, in fact, their humble servant. They begin first with dulling weapons, and thinning spots on armor, in an attempt to cause the traveler to fall in battle. Should this fail, they begin to bait creatures into the traveler's camp, and will continue to do so until their tribute resumes; or the traveler, or the Brownie, is slain.

Suggested Environments

Brownies in the wild tend to be in forests, and swamps. They like mushrooms, honey, and berries, and bread. They can often be found near bees, streams, and in pine trees. Other brownies can be found in the homes of peasants, struggling craftsmen, and those in need of their help.
