Doge of Venice
Sometimes translated to Duke, the Doge of Venice is a title used in Venice by it's Great Council. The Great Council of Venice is made up of the local aristocrats and head merchants, and would vote the Doge into office. The position is non-hereditary and for life. The rank can never be passed to another, and only be passed to another family member if the Great Council votes the person in. They act as the chief magistrate, and leader. They are regularly titled as "My Lord the Doge", "Most Serene Prince", or "His Serenity", or addressed as such when dealing with others.
