Dragon Kin - Wyverns, Wyrms, Sea Serpents, Dragon Turtles & Drakes
Wyverns, Wyrms, Sea Serpents, Dragon Turtles and Drakes are all creatures that are descended from dragons. They are all unique in their own ways, and all are dangerous in their own ways too.
Wyverns are dangerous creatures found throughout the world, primarily in more rocky, hilly & mountainous regions. Seemingly evolved from dragons some time in the distant past, they lack any breath attack, at least of note. They are violent predators, smaller in size than their ancestors, having but one set of legs, a set of wings in place of forelegs, and a voracious appetite too. They can be partially tamed and used as a mount, but will happily eat their master if no other food is available. They are wide ranging being in most temperate climates.
Wyrms are rare and more of a folk tale. They are usually depicted as legless, wingless dragons, though this is usually a mistake by those who have encountered one. It is usually the name given to the eldest of ancient dragons.
Sea Serpents are a form of Dragon Kin found in the largest bodies of water and in the oceans of the world. Completely limbless, they are lithe creatures with a breath weapon attack, and excellent swimmers. They feed on large water based animals, and regularly attack seafarers to get at the treasures on board ships. They use these or underwater caves & coral reefs as nests. They evolved from standard shaped dragons millions of years ago to take full advantage of living in the sea, and can breathe both water and air as a result.
Dragon Turtles are a strange entry. There is no direct lineage from dragonkind and no evolutionary connection. They are found in the oceans and follow the traits of dragons by hoarding treasure and having a breath weapon attack. The two leading ideas is: their ancestors fed on dragons in ages past gaining the traits by this method, or by a magical experiment gone wrong creating the first dragon turtles. They are massive enough to be mistook for islands at times.
Drakes are purely magical in nature. They are the result of taking bones and/or scales of a type of dragon (usually deceased), and imbuing it with specific magical practices & components to create a smaller dragon-like creature. None can fly but most have a breath attack, and usually specific quirks due to the parentage of the bones / scales used. They are usually created with the help of a powerful dragon, and controlled by dragon cultists for specific tasks. Pretty much all drakes are chromatic in origin, as the metallic and gem dragons find such a process abhorrent and unnatural, akin to graverobbing & necromancy.
