The Eurasian Beaver is quite widespread. One of the larger rodents, they are adapted to swimming in rivers, wetlands, and similar habitats. They are herbivores, and constantly gnaw on trees to help keep their incisors in check (like many rodents their incisors constantly grow throughout their lives). They use this to fell smaller trees, keeping the amounts of some species in check, and allowing space & sunlight for other plants to grow. They take parts of these trees to their wetland homes, and build and/or maintain dams in deeper parts of the water. There they live and breed, usually in breeding pairs. In many cases this helps protect them from predators.   The average beaver is brown in hair colour, quite chubby, with a flattened tail & webbed paws. Along with their hair being hard to truly soak through & being able to hold their breath, they are natural swimmers. Their dams are only truly open from below, and when these are large enough, causes minor flooding, helping to maintain wetlands. In a few instances they are hunted for their pelts which are used for clothing by nobles. Any hunted & killed without permission on a noble's estate is likely to be charged with poaching.

Suggested Environments

Rivers, streams, and lakes throughout Europe & Asia.
