Giant-kin - Ogres, the Children of Orcus

A race of large aggressive Giant-kin, the Ogres (fem. Ogress) are found found throughout western Europe, especially in the Frankish region. They are cannibals, with a preference for infants & children of other humanoid creatures. They are not the brightest of creatures, but are strong, and with an insatiable hunger. Their origin lies with the god Orcus, who was worshipped originally by the Etruscans in northern Italy. The belief in Orcus was then folded into Roman religion when they took over and expanded their territory. Never a powerful god, only a few believers ever worshipped Orcus openly, and spread the cult up into western Europe. Temples are built into a mound or hill, and usually has graves attached due to Orcus being a god of the Underworld. The Ogres came into existence when Orcus needed servants to carry out his duties on Earth. Since the fall of Rome, they have since been freed and the only known worshippers of Orcus left.   Ogres generally live alone, only meeting up with others when there is plentiful food in an area, or to breed. Each Ogre will feed on whatever it will catch in an area, before moving on when it has exhausted all this. Usually one or more will take over a building they have partially ruined to get at the inhabitants, and use it as a base for hunting. Creatures like Orcs or Goblins will use the Ogre's natural hunger to get them to join up to their tribes or warbands. This means the Ogre will get extra food, while the rest get best spoils of any treasure.   Rarely an Ogre will rape a human or humanoid, and this can sometimes result in pregnancy. The child will be known as a Half-Ogre, or Ogrillion, and the birth trauma will inevitably kill the human or humanoid mother. Ogres generally don't care, as their needs have been met, and any consequences are far too far in the future to ever consider.
