Random Properties. The
Grand Shadow Grimoire has the following random properties:
- 3 Minor Beneficial Properties
- 1 Major Beneficial Property
- 3 Minor Detrimental Properties
Dexterity Increase. After spending the requisite amount of time reading & studying the grimoire, your Dexterity score is increased by 3 to a maximum of 23. You can't gain this improvement more than once.
Rites of Darkness & Shadow. The longer the grimoire is studied the shadowy realm it comes from infects you. You and your equipment looses colour and appears in shades of gray. This causes a -2 to Charisma, and all proficiency roll related to Charisma. At the same time, shadowy smoke is given off by yourself and the book, giving you a +2 to all Dexterity (Stealth) checks & to hide, and a further -1 to all enemy proficiency checks to hit with ranged attacks.
Soul Eater. As the grimoire is used, your soul becomes tainted with it's power. Eventually, if you die while still attuned to it, your soul is absorbed, and not even a
True Resurrection or
Wish spell can return you from death.
Magical Knowledge. Your knowledge of spells increase with this grimoire, allowing you access to five additional spells of the Conjuration, Evocation, and Necromancy schools, in addition to any spells you already have. The only drawback is spells that raise the dead, or summon Elementals, cannot be used in the Demiplane of Shadow if used there. Other spellcasters do not benefit from the book, but still has a 25% chance of transcribing one spell from it, after a continuous month of studying it.
Destroying the Grimoire. The grimoire can only be destroyed in two ways. The first is by a Celestial in the city at the centre of the Demiplane of Shadow, and will return to the same spot within
1d100 years. The second, is by taking it to the domain of a Lawful Good deity and asking a Celestial to destroy it there. This allows for a
1d100 with a 75% chance of it being permanently destroyed. If failed, it will return as mentioned before. In both cases it has to be blasted with Radiant damage for 3 whole hours continuously.
The Grand Shadow Grimoire is a notorious book of spells and rituals tied to the Demiplane of Shadow. Rarely found on the Material Plans, and even rarer in the Shadowfell, it gives of a slight shadowy smoke from its black leather bindings & cover. The leather itself is unknown, with it claimed to be made from the skin of thirteen warlocks or an ancient Dark God. The gray-white pages feel frail but tough enough to survive handling, and rumoured to be vellum, again made from the same sources. Strange unknown symbols are carved on the surface and inked in pale silver. Writings on the inside are made with what appears to be soot mixed with blood.
The grimoire only responds to the touch of a warlock, and other spellcasters also search for it either to destroy it, or learn it's secrets. Most die and, any spells that the spellcaster knows that's not in the book appears within it in 24 hours (written in the blood & burned remains of them). The energies of it are rumoured to drive animals away, and the person haunted by shadow people.
