Hacksilver / Hacksilber

Hacksilver (sometimes referred to as Hacksilber) is silver found as part of bullion or as a form of payment. Rumoured to have been used as far back as Roman times, it is used by the Norse as a form of payment regularly. The silver is cut or 'hacked' off a silver object and used for payment of goods or services. Many Norse would have access to a small weight set and payment would be made of a certain weight in silver. Some of the earliest examples actually go back to Phaeacian times, when they controlled the Mediterranean silver trade, and before they adopted Greek coinage.
