Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins are a warlike species that seems to have originated somewhere between Asia, and the Asiatic Steppes. The exact location is unknown, though they seem to have loose connections to many human tribes with strong horse cultures.   They have a highly militaristic aggressive culture and can be found in their own warbands, or fighting as mercenaries for others, such as the Huns, Slavs, Avar & Mongols.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The Hobgoblins are a militaristic society being led by a Warlord, with some Captains and then the average warriors below that. Their tribal bands are referred to Legions. They are ruthless, loyal and disciplined although will attack other legions if encountered. Only the strongest leaders will prevent this happening. They usually will team up with other Goblinoids and drive them up front to swamp the enemy. They do have a sense of tactics that allow them to plan battles ahead of time.   They do keep animals for use, such as pack animals to carry them into battle or pull carts. They train ravens to use as messenger birds, and wolves to act the same way as guard dogs & attack dogs.   They try to take over strategic locations so they can collect resources like wood, metal and slaves. Also, they will carry out reconnaissance especially if facing something formidable like a Stronghold. When encamped anywhere they will happily add defensive features.

Facial characteristics

Beetling brows, with a largish nose, pointed ears. Yellow or dark brown eyes. Wide mouth with sharp and yellowed teeth. Some have a blue or red nose that is a sign of virility and power.

Worldwide, though mainly in Asia and the Asiatic Steppes.

Average Intelligence

Hobgoblins are as smart as any human, though their intelligence is more geared to war and war alone.

Besides all the standard senses they have Darkvision.

Civilization and Culture

History

Hobgoblins appeared shortly before Humans moved into the Asian & Asiatic Steppes regions. The exact origin is unknown, though it is speculated that elements of the Fey, and especially the Elves, went to move into the area after loosing ground to Humanity. And from there mutated into the Hobgoblins. What caused this ranges from the region causing them to mutate naturally, to a curse caused by magic or the Dark Fey, to the Fey bringing onto themselves after contact with or worship of a Dark God.   Whatever the reason they soon multiplied and expanded, fighting both for and against the encroaching human civilisations, but never getting enough numbers to truly dominate any region. They have spread beyond in to Asia more than into Europe but still have some presence especially in Eastern Europe, and no real evidence as yet in other continents.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They regularly work with other Goblinoids, Giants and Trolls. They sometimes work with other Steppes peoples for common goals, or as mercenaries. Everyone else they see as either slaves or prey.
