Le Marchand Configuration
Le Marchand Configuration
Wondrous Item
Legendary Requires Attunement
Open Portal. If a creature has the talent, desire, and push while trying to solve this puzzle, they will solve the puzzle and open a portal to Leviathan's Labyrinth. By examining the box-like shape, running a finger or thumb over a circular brass filigree section on the outside, and making a DC 15 Wisdom check the puzzle solves itself. Depending what the creature rolls depends what happens next. On a roll of 1, a trap appears to be set off where the filigree pulls open a hole in the structure, pages of papyrus appear to unfold out of it, and rush around the creature slicing through clothes & armour causing 100 20d10 slashing damage. On a roll of 2-10, the same trap is activated and a Cenobite appears taking the creature to the Labyrinth for eternal torment. On a roll of 11-14, nothing happens. On a roll of 15+, the trap is not sprung an a Cenobite appears to take the creature to the Labyrinth, and given the chance to be turned into another Cenobite, or learn the secrets therein.
The Le Marchand Configuration is the original puzzle box created with the Flesh of Leviathan. Created by Phillipe Le Marchand who had murdered seven children at this point to gain the human fat needed to work the Flesh. The Flesh was stacked in an order that could be manipulated by pressing on certain points of a circular disc made of worked brass filigree fashioned to the outside. The shape of the box was held in place and adorned with worked brass filigree. This helped keep its shape and spells of containment and demon summoning has been worked into the surface of the brass. This is written in Infernal, Abyssal, Deep Speech, Celestial, and Angelic / Enochian. It also shows fine detail of what looks like cuts, with very fine lines of brass interlacing them, and some of the spells are worked into miniature form on what looks like exceptionally small brass pages. Reading these are meant to be in a specific order, along with pressing certain worked filigree of the cuts, along with specific script parts, and trying to move the disc opens the puzzle causing it to open, change shape or close. It seems to work easier if the user has a general desire, and even quicker if this desire is for extremes of some type.
If opened the disc opens into four triangles with a small pit forming in the material below it. If done incorrectly the user is cut to ribbons by what appears to be pages of papyrus that are razor sharp. This appears to be so bad at times, when a corpse is found with the box, it looks as if they had been hacked to pieces by multiple opponents over the course of hours and not seconds. Sometimes bodies aren't found at all, and the victim has just disappeared. To a few a being that has been called The Librarian has appeared and either offered occult help to the summoner or taken them away to some other dimension. Very very few persons have lived & stayed on the Material Plane when they encounter this puzzle. When asked they are never the same afterwards, and also make the point that when opened, the sound of a large distant church bell can be heard making a pattern of three rings and a child crying. Usually bright cold white light can be seen appearing from cracks and holes in surrounding structures like walls, and sometimes a wall will open with a cold dark stone passageway is present with no end in sight.
If any of this happens, either way no sign of the puzzle box is seen of it until it falls into the hands of someone else. Mysterious Middle Eastern or Asian foreigners or tramps offer the box to other deserving persons for whatever amount they think is appropriate. Every time they always ask the buyers "what is your Pleasure Sir / Ma'am?". After the sale, they always reply with "It was always yours", and then vanish quickly.
Exactly where the box is now is unknown, though guaranteed to appear sometime again.
