Embedded Damage. If the Mambele is pulled out, it causes secondary damage of 7 2d6 slashing damage.   Throwing attack. The Mambele can be thrown causing even more damage than if used as a hand weapon. It uses the secondary damage, and range mentioned.

Mambele weapons are a mix of axe and throwing knife. It hails from Central & Southern Africa, and has made it's way up as far as the Nile Basin. It consists of an iron blade, with a curved back section and a rearward spike. Used in close combat, it is like a hatchet or dagger, though it is used more as a throwing weapon to get the full effect. It usually consists of four blades, one at the top and three at the back. Because of this design it makes it dangerous to pull out causing further damage. It usually is 22 inches in length. The name of Mambele is used by the main users, the Manbetu.

A few tribes use it, and it is sometimes named differently according to tribal tradition. These names are:


  • Hunga Munga

  • Danisco (by the Marghi)

  • Goieyo (by the Musgum)

  • Njiga (by the Bagirmi)

  • Kpinga (by the Zandi)


The latter versions are classed as !Court Metal" and produced under patronage of the Avongara clan. Distributed to professional soldiers it is a status symbol, and can be presented as part of a dowry to the soldier if needed. They usually kept three or four of these behind their shield where, they would regularly get thrown 30 feet before the main attack.

In many cases they are status symbols, and can be made of either softer or rarer materials. Some had bulbous blades and multipronged too.
