Mining / Miners

Mining is highly important at the present time. After the fall of the Roman Empire, many nations, tribes, and communities were left with dwindling resources. A mini ice age, the Huns, and other tribes migrating through and into Europe worsened the conditions. After this died down, new powers arose, and some started to bounce back.   One resource that every group needed since is metal and mineral wealth. In some even basic stone became important for shoring up old buildings & defences, and the construction of new buildings & defences. Mining can be very lucrative. Hitting a large ore deposit can make even the lowliest man rich if handled correctly. With a growing population (including Dwarves and Gnomes), mining could easily be done. Many of the noble & religious classes also back these enterprises, even more so if precious metals & gems can be found & exploited. And nothing to say about the new demand for stone fortifications & places of worship. Any miner could, and will be, employed if there is gold, silver, and shiny new gems can be pulled out of the earth.   It is not without it's hazards. Some of the older mines have fallen into disrepair, making them treacherous to work. Others have monsters or worse residing in them, ready & willing to attack & kill any who enter. Yet more break through to ancient underground caverns containing forgotten evils that should never have been found, let alone awoke in some cases. In many instances, the Underdark has now been truly ventured into. In an extremely rare few, great treasure is pulled out in the form of three types of ore; mithril, adamantine and warpstone. The former two are allowing Dwarves, and the odd Elf smith with the relevant knowledge to make spectacular weapons & armour, and as for the latter, bad luck, hallucinations, nightmares, disease and mutation occur regularly. That is, of course, if the effects of magic aren't heightened within proximity to the warpstone.
