Mizzium
Mizzium is magic-infused steel alloy. Not native to Earth small amounts are still discovered, usually in the form of ruined items & equipment. It seems to come another world called Ravnica, and used by a group calling themselves the Izzet League. This group is even rarer to encounter than the metal, but those that have been will pay handsomely for any amount of Mizzium. They seem to use it for constructs down to the very tools they use to manufacture their many strange items. Runic markings help to channel & control the elemental energy that flows through the metal.
The magical properties of the metal are difficult to define succinctly. It is as hard as adamantine, except when it is transformed into a gaseous suspension, It has a high melting point, except when it is found in liquid form at cool autumn temperatures. Izzet chemisters can readily explain that mizzium helps to maximise metastream potentials, realize fractional element-binding, and transduce local weird-field radicals, but no-one what any of that means.
What little is found on Earth is quickly spirited away by members of the Izzet League when they find it. As mentioned, most if not all at present is found in items created by the Izzet League. This usually has came to Earth through portals that have been accessed by inhabitants of Ravnica that have travelled through. On very rare instances there is a small amount found in craters from the remains of comets & meteors that have fell to Earth. Why such metal exists in these is unknown, yet when some is found it has had a couple of explanations. Some theorise that it was parts of debris that crossed the void between Earth from Ravnica's home star system. Others think that when an iron-rich meteor hits the right spot on Earth, it is transformed from iron into mizzium, especially in areas that there is strong magical, elemental, and/or Fey energy present.
Many alchemists that know of mizzium will also pay high prices for it, believing it will aid in the processes they work at. Similarly, wizards, clerics and shamans such as druids, also seek out this metal when they can for the same properties.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Mizzium is a hard metal with the strength of adamantium, with odd melting points depending when cooled or heated by external factors (like time of year, and where it's found). Very small amounts are found naturally on Earth and usually small lumps & flakes are found.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Mizzium can be used to channel & interact with magic easily. The downside, is that certain runes used by the Izzet League use is needed to be carved into any item created from it. The specific task the item is for, needs certain runes in a specific order to direct this quality. Without it, the mizzium can supply too much or too little elemental magic into the outcome. It seems more inclined to magics involving elementals, and give major boosts to any magical working with these beings.
Geology & Geography
The mizzium on Earth when found is small, usually in craters from meteorite craters, or even the odd comet crater. Otherwise it has already been worked into artificial items.
Origin & Source
It is not known at present exactly where this metal comes from, though it is linked to the star system that Ravnica is found in.
History & Usage
Everyday use
This metal can be used to create magical devices, tools, weapons, armour, and even elemental containing constructs. Very few on Earth knows exactly what to do with mizzium though. The only way to truly use it is to take it to the world of Ravnica and the Izzet League.
