Owlbears are large creatures reminiscent of a bear with the head of an owl. There is feathers & fur on it's head, and along the back of it's forelegs. It can range in colour, being multi-coloured, tiger like, bear like, owl like, or purple in colour scheme.   Nobody knows where the first owlbear came from though there are stories that the forest of their kind happened somewhere in the middle of Europe by a wizard trying to combine the traits of both of these predators. Whatever it was, they got loose, and are now slowly breeding, with each other, and bears. They give birth to live young, usually 1 to 3 cubs who suckle at first then are weened on to meat by the mother. Either way, they are ill-tempered creatures, that view any other living creature as food, and will usually have it's own hunting ground, only leaving it to mate. They can glide a short distance, and a few can be broken in if young enough to be used as mounts (though there is always the risk that they can turn and eat it's rider). They also prefer night-time hunting, and Wood Elves will use them for defence if any are near the Elves treetop homes.
