Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty is the power on the throne of China, the largest empire in Asia. The Li Family is credited as starting the Dynasty, ruling from 618 AD onwards. Empress Wu Zetian controlled the Empire during the years 690-705 AD as part of the Wu Zhou dynasty before reverting back to the Tang.

Structure

Ruled by an Emperor drawn from the extended Tang Family, the Dynasty has a set number of governors & civil servants below them to run the day to day running of the empire. A separate military is also in place that can be called upon to stop civil unrest, enforce laws with the civil service, and deal with outside enemies.

Culture

The Dynasty demands obedience in all citizens and to work hard for the empire, as well as for the cultural & social aspects of the people. Language & text, clothing & building design, civilian & military equipment has set standards along with money, laws, taxes, agriculture, business, and religion.

Public Agenda

They are seen as a stable and homogenous society with little problems except for the odd crime that most cultures have. They are expert traders and generally peaceful, but well-organised and willingly aggressive if angered. They want to protect their own, and grow if they can. That may mean taking over lands if need be.

Assets

A massive army and navy protects the Tang Dynasty, along with large reserves of equipment. The civilian side of life, has excellent resources with metals, wood, and money available along with access to medicine, food & farming, and space to grow. Standardised equipment, clothing, buildings, monetary transactions and laws along with everything being recorded on paper allows for access to the best of each these.

History

Taking over in the early 7th century AD, the Tang Dynasty has ruled since except for a period from 690 AD to 701 AD, they have codified everything they can and spread. The Dynasty has cemented it's reputation for being well-organised and regularly having little bother within it's borders. Holding up the tenants of the Silk Road, they have access to outside resources and news from anything that may threaten them down the line.

Demography and Population

The population of the Tang Dynasty is about the lower end of the hundreds of millions. Chang'an has a population pushing 70 to 80 million alone.   They are a monarchy so they can claim anything or anyone as being under the Crown. Large areas are given over to farming, along with specific trades with the likes of mining and salt production. Towns & cities are placed in regions either having grown naturally or placed in areas of specific importance.   All of those with any ranks are chosen from the population that has been brought up & studied the teachings of Confucius. This stops the person in question becoming a noble man or woman and can be replaced by someone else entirely from another family.   One unique aspect, that's also common in many bordering Asian lands, is that Dragonborn are accepted and welcomed. Many serve in the government & military along with entering the priesthood. A number of temples have sprung up and generally split between northern & southern temples.

One of the largest nations on the planet at present the Tang Dynasty controls a massive area, stretching from the Pacific in the east to the edge of Indian territory & the Himalayas in the west. Mongolia lies to the north to smaller Asian powers lie to the south.

Military

They have a large military under their control that is spread throughout their territory and are well equipped & trained.

Religion

Buddhism is a large religion, along with Confucius beliefs & Ancestor Worship is quite common too.

Foreign Relations

Generally the Tang are somewhat open to other nations. This is especially true about the other Asian nations, and trade is common far beyond the whole region of Asia. They control the final part of the Silk Road, and it helps them keep abreast of foreign affairs as well as acting as brokers for trade across the whole region.

Agriculture & Industry

The Dynasty has heavy agriculture, growing not just foodstuffs for their citizens, but herbs, spices and medicine, as well as growing silk. The latter areas can be sold on the Silk Road, and their silk is classed as the best in the known world.   Besides silk, herbs and spices, they have access to large forested regions & mines in some regions. They have a large carpentry base, as well as stonemasons, along with metalworkers. These are all trained to a high a standard as possible, making goods etc as good as any other nation.

Trade & Transport

The Dynasty has access to massive trade routes. A civilian navy plies the China Sea, and northern Indian Ocean, as far as the Arabian Peninsula & the Horn of Africa going back & forth with goods in either direction. Along with this, is a massive network of roads going through the Indian subcontinent using trade wagons & pack horses, as far as the Levant and to the north and Novgorod. This is known as the Silk Road.   Internally, roads and waystations help in the country allowing for trade within the borders of China. These can go to centralised cities to be moved on further, or sent to smaller regions instead.
