The Mansi People
Originally known as the Voguls, the Mansi are closely related to the Khanty people. They speak a form of Ugric of the Uralic language related to the same root language of the Hungarians.
They arrive in the Ural region & Western Siberia in the first Millennium BC and have lived simple lives since. Known to the Slavs & the Rus, they have had peaceful relations, though the odd conflict is known. Generally these are lowkey and usually personal grudges between individiuals.
Many are hunter-gatherers making use of seasonal trails & hunting grounds, and when approached by more 'settled' peoples will help them if persuaded or helped in return. Those that don't are turned away. Semi-nomadic, some raise reindeer, and others will take to lower lands to practise agriculture such as growing barley, and raising cattle & horses. Leatherwork is common, and with birchbark, will have these decorated with mosaics.
During winter while not making use of rectuangular shelters made out of birch bark and poles when travelling, they use stationary huts made out of earth & branches at permanent villages. The Mansi are quite advanced in some respects using long bows, arrows & spears, as well as iron helmets & chainmail.
The Mansi practice shamanism & are primarily made up of bear cults. The animal is sacred to them and make use of a bear's skinn & hide, and the bones, especially the skulls for ceremonies. They view such an animal as being strong in body & spirit. They have an annual bear celebration with a bear hunt and lasts a few days involving song, dance & plays.
The Mansi have a set amount of specific holy sites, and one seems to be based at Kholat Syakhi. They view the place as a cursed place at times with little useable game, and a dread reputation due to the Necrocult. They know something is there and try to keep it pacified, at least for their own peoples. Shamans are known to speak to the dead there and will happily try to stop any bad spirits escaping from the Dyaylov Pass.
