Harpy
From the Chronicles of the Lost Explorer, Vol. IV: "The eerie melody wafted through the trees, drawing me closer despite my growing sense of dread. As I stumbled through the underbrush, I caught sight of them—creatures with the bodies of birds and the faces of women, their eyes glinting with a predatory hunger. Harpies. I watched in horror as they descended upon a hapless deer, their talons tearing through flesh with ease. The song that had once been so alluring now seemed a cruel mockery of beauty, a siren call leading to certain doom. If I am to survive this cursed forest, I must find a way to block out their bewitching tune."
Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
Harpies are typically found in rugged, isolated regions such as rocky cliffs, dense forests, and desolate islands. They prefer areas that offer both high vantage points and secluded nesting spots. These creatures build their nests in the crevices of mountainsides or among the highest branches of ancient trees, often near the sea where the wind currents aid their flight. Harpies thrive in environments that are difficult for other creatures to navigate, using the terrain to their advantage when hunting or evading threats.
Behaviour
Harpies are predatory by nature, known for their cunning and vicious hunting tactics. They often hunt in groups, using their enchanting songs to lure unsuspecting victims into traps. Once the prey is entranced, the harpies swoop down with their sharp talons and carry them off to their nests. In addition to their hunting prowess, harpies are fiercely territorial, defending their nesting grounds aggressively against intruders. They are also scavengers, feeding on carrion when live prey is scarce. Socially, harpies have a strict hierarchy within their groups, with the strongest and most cunning individuals leading.
