Rat Swarm

"At first, there was only the faint sound of rustling in the dark, like the whisper of leaves in a breeze. But as I peered deeper into the shadows, the noise grew louder, more insistent—a churning, gnawing sound that sent a chill down my spine. Then they came, a seething tide of filthy fur and gleaming eyes, teeth bared and ready to consume anything in their path. There is no fighting a rat swarm; there is only fleeing, and praying that you are faster than the unlucky soul who falls behind." —Old town folk tale, warning children not to wander into the sewers.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Rat swarms can be found in a variety of environments, from urban sewers and abandoned buildings to dark forests and desolate ruins. They thrive in places where food is plentiful and where they can remain hidden from larger predators. In cities, they are often found in the forgotten corners of the underground, feeding on refuse and discarded scraps. In wilderness areas, they seek out dark, damp places such as caves or dense thickets where they can nest and multiply with ease.

Behaviour

Rat swarms are highly social and operate with a frightening level of coordination. When threatened or hungry, they move as a single, writhing mass, overwhelming their prey through sheer numbers. Each individual rat is driven by basic survival instincts, but together, they become a relentless, ravenous force. They are opportunistic feeders, willing to devour anything edible they come across, from grains and fruits to flesh and bone. Their sharp teeth and insatiable hunger make them a danger not only to small animals but also to larger creatures and even humans, should they be caught unawares.
