Personal history
Taq was born into the shadows of the bustling Trade Consortium of Mercora, a sprawling city where commerce and intrigue thrived in equal measure. As a ratman, Taq was naturally suited to the life of a thief, with his nimble fingers, sharp senses, and innate ability to move unseen through the labyrinthine alleys and sewer networks of the city. He quickly rose through the ranks of the local thieves' guild, known for his daring heists and uncanny knack for evading capture.
For years, Taq served the guild faithfully, always delivering on his promises and never questioning the orders of his superiors. However, ambition is a dangerous companion, and Taq's insatiable curiosity led him to uncover a cache of valuable artifacts hidden away by the guild's leader, a ruthless figure. Seeing an opportunity to secure his future, Taq made the fateful decision to steal a portion of the treasure.
His betrayal did not go unnoticed. The guild master quickly discovered the theft and put a bounty on Taq's head. The once-secure life Taq had built crumbled overnight as he became the hunted, barely escaping with his life through a combination of luck and his own quick thinking. Desperate and with no safe haven left in the Trade Consortium, Taq fled the city.
Blending in with a group of refugees heading to a newly established town in the wildlands, Taq found a temporary respite from the relentless pursuit of the enforcers. The settlement, founded by Alais, offered not just a semblance of safety but also a tantalizing opportunity. The town was ripe for the picking, filled with naive settlers and burgeoning trade.
Taq quickly assessed the community's vulnerabilities, seeing potential marks and untapped resources everywhere. He ingratiated himself with the settlers, using his skills to help them and build trust, all the while planning how to exploit their weaknesses. His talent for stealth and subterfuge proved invaluable in scouting missions, and he offered his expertise in setting up defenses, further embedding himself within the community.
Despite his outward appearance of helpfulness, Taq never lost sight of his true nature. He began to quietly siphon off resources, establish secret stashes, and manipulate the settlement's fledgling economy to his advantage. He played the long game, biding his time and waiting for the perfect moment to make his move.
