Trollhound

Field Notes from Ranger Thalos Greenleaf: "Our patrol stumbled upon a gruesome sight today—a herd of deer, mutilated and partially devoured. The tracks leading away from the carnage were unmistakable: trollhounds. As night fell, their eerie howls echoed through the forest, sending shivers down our spines. We fortified our camp, knowing that these monstrosities are relentless once they have the scent of prey. In the moonlight, I caught a glimpse of their eyes, glowing with a predatory hunger. They charged at us with a terrifying speed and ferocity, their wounds closing as quickly as we inflicted them. We barely survived the night, and I fear the trollhounds will haunt these woods long after we are gone."

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Trollhounds are often found in the same environments as their troll masters—dark forests, dank caves, and swampy regions. They thrive in humid, shadowy areas where they can blend into the surroundings and ambush prey. These creatures are frequently encountered in the deeper, more secluded parts of these habitats, where human and animal activity is minimal, allowing them to roam and hunt freely. Trollhounds also favor places with dense underbrush or tangled roots, which provide excellent cover for their hunting tactics.

Behaviour

Trollhounds exhibit a pack mentality, often hunting in small groups led by a dominant alpha. They are fiercely loyal to their troll companions and can be seen patrolling the perimeters of troll lairs or accompanying them on hunting expeditions. Trollhounds possess a keen sense of smell and sharp instincts, making them excellent trackers. Their ferocity in battle is matched only by their regenerative abilities, akin to trolls, allowing them to recover rapidly from injuries. They communicate through a series of growls and barks, coordinating their attacks and overwhelming their prey with sheer numbers and relentless aggression.
