Field Scholar Profession in The Twilight Imperium (Genesys) | World Anvil

Field Scholar

Spacefaring civilizations have spread throughout the stars for tens of thousands of years, empires rising and falling as the galaxy has spun ever onward. As regimes have been born, grown, and died, so too have their repositories of knowledge and unique technologies. Most factions invest in scholarly research and the study of ancient civilizations, including scholarship on the Lazax Empire and the Mahact kings of old, in hopes of uncovering their secrets and replicating their lost technologies. Achieving these goals requires some of the best and brightest minds from several academic disciplines working to restore lost chapters of history.

While there are plenty of academics who prefer their sterile lab or peaceful study to engage in their academic pursuits, most recognize the need for fieldwork. The relics of undiscovered history are out there, after all, buried beneath the ashes of disaster and tragedy, awaiting rediscovery. While it is easy to think of the Field Scholar as cold or joyless, and such individuals certainly exist, most are dreamers and romantics in search of adventure, longing to make a difference.

When someone discovers a potential archaeological site, or a relic of the Mahact kings, or some other great and ancient threat, most factions try to hoard the find to gain an edge over their rivals. However, word inevitably spreads, and eventually the only compromise is to submit to Keleres oversight. Field Scholars survey sites, authenticate artifacts, or conduct more extended research as a neutral party under the auspices of the Keleres. While most Field Scholars are academics, usually some type of archaeologist or historian, there are also physicists, biologists, geneticists, engineers, linguists, and countless others who contribute in their own way. Many have multiple areas of expertise.
