Loki
Loki is a cold world situated far from its star. Its large, chilly oceans are salty enough to resist freezing except at the poles. Loki’s landmasses are typically thin, stretching for long distances through the briny seas. This makes them susceptible to ocean-driven storms even far into the interior. Summer storms bring cold rain and thunder, while winter storms change to blizzards and ice. Although the world never evolved an indigenous sapient species, the wet and dismal weather seemed like a great deterrent to colonization, which makes it ironic that the planet drew settlers from two different species in the last century.
Human isolationists settled Loki first, building a colony dubbed Solitude on one of the larger landmasses. However, they had only been established for a few decades when Yssaril dissidents arrived from Shalloq and quietly began establishing their own hidden communities on the far side of the world.
Once both sides learned of each other’s presence, they began attempting to push each other to leave. Neither particularly wanted to involve the cultures they had left behind, and so over the last few decades, a slowly simmering shadow war has evolved between Solitude and its satellite colonies and the Yssaril communities of Sallens and Quillik. Some of the smaller communities have hammered out truces, but most continue to engage in an appropriately cold war on this cold world.
