Wellon

Wellon is best known for its idyllic skyscapes with picturesque cities floating through the billowing clouds. The development of floating cities occurred in part due to Wellon’s unusual geography; the planet holds vast quantities of helium and other lighter elements within its relatively fragile crust. Frequent seismic activity releases these gases into the atmosphere, from which the cities harvest them in their chemical mining rigs before preparing them for sale. Cities like the capital, Azure Glide, float thanks to a combination of helium tanks and antigrav systems, which serve as an important backup should a tank spring a leak.

Wellon’s atmosphere is breathable to most species and supports a range of cloud-based species. However, the surface is dangerous to live on because of the frequent earthquakes, and in highly geologically active areas, it is not uncommon for a sudden release of gases to make the air hazardous to breathe. This has led to a homegrown cybernetics industry specializing in lung implants and integral nasal filters. The work has become so advanced that several off-world corporations have sought out the expertise of Wellon’s noted cyberneticists.
