Fritz Salamandra Droganora Fitzgerald IV
Bringer of Good Dreams
Backstory
The gnome Fritz Salamandra Dragonora Fitzgerald III was born to noble parents in the kingdom of Temerion. His family originally hailed from the far western land of Chitax. At a young age he saw his parents go bankrupt and lose all their wealth, having to raise their son in poverty. To avoid the humiliation of the city, the Fitzgerald family moved to a small village in the woods where they made a living as alchemists and merchants. Throughout Fritz’s childhood he repeatedly had to hear about how he was above the common folk and that he was destined for great riches. Riches that he never got to see for himself. When he was young and just about to delve into the family business, tragedy struck. His parents were deep in the Drakweld forest trying to collect some rare plants and vegetation and they never came back. They were never seen again. Many attributed their disappearance to the witch of the Drakweld forest. A mysterious hag that lived in a walking cabin deep in the woods. Fritz didn’t dare to go and search for his parents, or the witch for that matter. Thus he was left alone, forced to do whatever it took to survive in a harsh and unforgiving world. As he grew up, all he craved was wealth and power. A craving that resulted in a particular fascination with the infamous witch of Drakweld. The mystique allured and after he a lost what little he had in a gamble, he ventured into the woods to find her. After more than a day of wandering through the forest, as the woods grew deeper and deeper, Fritz suddenly stumbled upon a glade. Within he saw a large cabin standing on four tall, thick pillars. However, when he got closer Fritz noticed that the pillars where actually goat legs. As he approached the cabin it lowered itself to the ground and the door opened for him. Inside he was met by a most foul sight. A large lady with dark gret, wart filled skin and white thin, greasy hair. Her large, hunchbacked body a simple linen dress that was decorated with all sorts of weird and strange things. Bandoliers of severed hands, dead frogs, crows heads, goat feat and all sorts of eyeballs covered the simple clothing. Around her neck hung a necklace of different ears. The hag turned towards Fritz and her horrid face made him flinch. Two narrow eyes stared at him behind a massive crooked nose. The mouth curved into a smile that displayed yellow and spread out teeth. “Well, how do you do little one? You lost? You’d have to be to wander into Granny Gertruds cabin,” she cackled and kept stirring in her massive iron pot.“No, I was looking for you madam. To be honest I was half expecting not to find you at all.”
“Oh pish posh, anyone who wishes to find me shall always be led to my cabin. It’s the way of the woods. And all those who seek me out want something from me. So what is it that you want?”
“Power, that is all I crave. The power to return to me what is rightfully mine.”
“Ah, a vengeful and greedy soul you are. I think we might be able to help each other.” She turned around and grabbed a leather pouch. She then dipped it in the bubbling cauldron whilst chanting weird and incomprehensible words. When she lifted it she opened it and grabbed a pink cupcake, which seemed freshly baked. “With this you get access to my supply of, let’s say, merchandise. They give pleasant dreams. Better than any dream you might have had before. Sell them and at whatever price you see fit and you may keep the profits for every seventh cake. In exchange, I shall also lend a portion of my might. If you do good, I might lend you more. What do you say?” Fritz hesitated for a moment before saying:
“Sounds terrific.”
“Wonderful,” the hag said and whipped out a piece of parchment. It was a contract. “Just sign here and I will help you reach your goal.” He looked at the contract, but for some reason he seemed to be unable to read it. A sudden dizziness made his vision blurry. The hag urged him to just sign already. And he did. Then everything went black and Fritz woke up at the edge of the woods. Next to him was a pouch. He picked it up, reached inside and took out a cupcake. Fritz smiled and looked back at the village. He had a fortune to make, and cupcakes to sell.
