Leira

Lady of Deception

Leira, also known as The Lady of Deception or The Lady of the Mists, is the goddess of deception and illusions and patroness of illusionists and liars.

Appearance

Leira has thus far never appeared in a solid, tangible form. She has only been seen in a gaseous, light grey mist shape.

Personality

She is an enigma, never telling the truth when falsehood will do. Everything she does and says is shrouded in layers of illusion and lies. She believes that truth is worthless and that misbelief and falsehood are what gives life meaning.

History

Not much is known about the deity that was Leira before her supposed death. But a few months after the Rise of the Alghollthus Empire, Leira was slain by the new deity of death, Urgathoa, wielding her magical scythe, which was, in fact, an artefact of Nethys. Her portfolios were subsequently absorbed by the lustful god.     Upon her death, her godly power erupted in a blast that reached her places of worship all across the world. Motes of her divinity coalesced into incorporeal beings known as glamers.   Some still believe Leira is alive and that she has used her death as a grand illusion, but the general consensus was that she was a dead power. By the late 15th century AM, it became known that Leira was in fact alive and delighted in the confusion created by rumours of her demise and return.

Divine Realm

Leira maintains a divine realm called the Courts of Illusion on the chaotic plane of the Maelstorm. After her demise, her body was thought to be adrift on the Astral Plane, like those of other dead powers, and she may have been for a while.

Worshipers

Leira has quite a small following. Her priests, known as Leirans, or Worshipers of the Mistshadow, wear silver masks and often disguise themselves to deceive those around them. Leirans will speak the truth only to other Leirans. High-level clerics of the Leiran faith are called Mistcallers.   Every morning, and on every moonlit night, Leirans lay face down and pray to the Lady of the Mists. If there is any mist, Leirans will walk through it and pray. The most revered act in the Leiran faith is the "Unmasking", a purification ritual performed when new followers enter the faith or if a follower changes rank. During the ritual, the follower will walk barefaced among its peers while the clergy holds up candles and reflective surfaces.   Not widely worshipped, the majority of her worshipers are users of illusion magic. While Leira may have few dedicated followers, a common citizen of the more eastern nations often pays homage to her before an important decision or judgment.
