Session 22: City of Chaos

General Summary

Nakor and Jeanne found themselves in the bar room of the Crusty Crab where Dormaruk's mother had brought his father, still tied up, into the inn for some breakfast. Kazagal had left during the night, to seek out a temple of Torag down in Deeptown. Nakor decided to sit down with the pair and get to know them a bit better. Meanwhile, Jeanne managed to spot a Frankonian tiefling sitting by the bar. She approached and after some friendly conversation, she learned that he was working for the Clandestane family, who recently got a new business partner, whom the tiefling didn't like. He described the man as a handsome human, with long brown hair and a strange coat with different embroideries. A description that Jeanne recognized as Gorick.   At this point, Dormaruk barged into the inn with the pastor at his heel. The minotaur was still covered in dried, coagulated blood. The two walked over to Nakor and the captain's parents. Nakor magically cleaned the minotaur whilst the pastor examined his father. After he had finished the albino birdman told them that they didn't have much time to save Dormaruk's father. As they rose to leave, Jeanne joined them. She had warned the tiefling about the devilish man and hoped to catch him again before he travelled back to Ponvarus. The group went back to the ship to get the golden rod. After clearing the desk in the captain's quarters, Dormaruk laid his father on it and bound him. His mother stood in the corner and observed. ¨   The pastor was given the rod and a diamond, given to them by the dragon Vurvayssun, so that he could attempt the revivification spell. The pastor was still unsure if he could make it work, but was willing to try. A debate broke out on how they were going to kill the minotaur as painlessly as possible. It was decided that Dormaruk would do the deed by breaking his neck. The plan was then for Jeanne, who had the most knowledge on medicinal matters, to perform an impromptu surgery on the corpse. Aided by Nakor, she would open the mans skull, find the parasite, remove it, and then close the head as best as she could. This would have to be done in 1 minute's time if the spell was to work. The spell would heal most of the postmortem wounds as well, but the surgical opening would have to be closed.    The process began, as Dormaruk broke his father's neck. Everyone got into place and Jeanne began her surgery. All went according to plan, even if the parasite was difficult to catch. When it had been removed, Dormaruk finished it off. The Pastor then got to work and tried to activate the spell, aided by Nakor. But as the diamond melted into shimmering light, something went wrong and the spell failed. Panicked, Dormaruk threw the last of Vurvayssun's diamonds at the pastor who tried again. This time he succeeded and Dormaruks father drew breath again. After the captain had embraced his father and mother, finally reunited, they headed off towards the Temple of Sarenrae. Recovering from death is a difficult ordeal and the captain's father needed tending to, which the temple offered. After leaving the minotaurs at the temple, the party went back to the Crusty Crab to rest.
Nakor on the other hand wished to investigate the Hellknight order which they had contacted last they were in town, and either or not they were able to weed out their corruption. The prince talked to Sir Horzin who technically originated from the same order, and he too was interested in finding out what happened to this chapter of the order. Jeanne followed them as well out of curiosity. When they finally reached what used to be the fortress-like building that was the order's headquarters, they found a smouldered pile of rubble. After asking some guards what had happened, they found out that after founding one of their own as a traitor. An incredible mistrust took hold within the order and they began to persecute and even execute citizens in the area. This brought a lot of trouble when they killed the family of a powerful adventurer, who lead an uprising against them and killed every last one of the hellknights.    From this the group decided that this city had no room for law and order. Sir Horzin became a bit uncomfortable, and as the prince investigated the rubble, he left for the ship. When Nakor and Jeanne walked back as well, they came upon a half-elf who seemed to have fallen on hard times. Nakor recognized him though. It was the novice who had dropped the magical deck of cards that he now carried with him. The half-elf saw Nakor and seemed to recognize him as well. After some questioning about if he had found the deck that he had dropped that day, which had cost him his place in the magical academy, the prince denied it all and offered to show him another deck of cards. He asked him to draw card from the deck to see that it was completely ordinary. Little did the half-elf know that this was the famous deck of many things, and as he drew a card with a skull on it, a dark-cloaked, skeletal figure wielding a spectral scythe appeared behind Nakor.     The half-elf became terrified, but it didn't seem like anyone else except the three of them could see this being. He told them that this battle was for the half-elf alone to face and before they knew, the spectral scythe passed through the poor citizen, pulling the soul out of him. The body fell dead on the ground, with no injuries. The figure took the soul in his hand and disappeared. Stunned after what Nakor had just done, Jeanne picked up the card and called on a nearby guard. Meanwhile, Nakor turned himself invisible. A satyr guard came running and became perplexed at the situation. Jeanne told him what had happened, but he didn't believe it. Still there was no injury on the body so the woman couldn't have killed him. Not wishing to deal with this, the guard dragged the body and dumped it into the sewers for the othygs to deal with.    Shocked by the lack of decorum and standards, Jeanne went back along with the invisible Nakor. She gave him a stern talking to as they went. Back at the Crusty Crab, they reunited with Dormaruk. They hadn't sat down long before Kazagal walked through the door.
