Vyriavaxus

Lord of Shadows

The demon lord Vyriavaxus is the patron of the shadow demons. He once led an invasion of the Material Plane, the Umbral Deluge, which nearly resulted in the Abyssal absorption of the continent of Kartia. During the final year of the Deluge, the Akkonian hero Hyron received an artifact, Morrowfall, from the God of the Sun, which was used to mortally wound Vyriavaxus during the battle of the Six Marshes. Hyron died during the combat, but the Morrowfall activated and his Dark Host was defeated.

Appearance

Personal accounts from the time of the Deluge attest to the Lord of Shadows manifesting in several shapes. The most common was that of a regal, featureless humanoid clad in black robes and wearing a dark crown; a hollow void made up its visage. Other forms include a gigantic bat-like creature and that of a black, translucent pit fiend.

Abyssal Realm

Rankarrus is the Abyssal layer ruled by Vyriavaxus. It contains three distinct segments: the Winding Caves of Ruination, the Forest of the Eternal Night, and the Court of Malevolence. The Court of Malevolence is a sinister, city-sized palace which serves as Vyriavaxus' personal domain and is where he and the Blackguard Nobility plan their dark deeds. The Forest of the Eternal Night surrounds the rest of Rankarrus, and is a sprawling, moonlit woodland where abyssal creatures stalk the land. It is a leisure destination for the Blackguard Nobility. Underneath everything are the Winding Caves of Ruination: twisted, toxic, and supremely dangerous. Demons who fall out of Vyriavaxus' favour are sent here in exile, and it is believed that exposure to these caves can corrupt even the strongest of demons into unrecognisable feral abominations, left to aimlessly wander never-ending stone corridors.   Though not a part of Rankarrus proper, a battlefield known as the Shadowed Valley has been the site of a nearly uninterrupted war between the demonic hosts of Vyriavaxus and Nocticula.

Unholy Symbol

Even amongst demons, Vyriavaxus is known for his self-obsession and vanity, and his unholy symbol thus consists of a black moon placed on top of a V-styled skeleton of a crown. Mortal cultists of the Dark Host tended to employ a sharper variant of the symbol, featuring an X in the empty space in place of the moon, as it was easier to stamp it into pieces of armour.

Servants

Vyriavaxus commands the loyalty of the shadow demons (also known as invidiaks). The four most powerful of these demons, the Harbingers of Fate, served at his side as the Dark Host's generals.   The Lord of Shadows tends to be worshipped by vampires, spies, conspirators, and the envious.
