Black powder is a material invented by gnomes, used as a slow-burning explosive element in their tinkering and pyrotechnics. Black powder has been used by gnomes for hundreds or potentially thousands of years, and its exact ingredients remain a closely-guarded trade secret by the Tinkery Guild.
As humans have settled and prospered in Illium their technologies have inevitably come in to contact with gnomish invention. Black powder has been experimented with in the use of weapons, though any experimentation remains largely rudimentary and untried.
