Focus crystals are rare gemstones with powerful magical qualities. In appearance they look just like any other precious stone, though they can be distinguished in the dark when they glow with an otherworldly light.
These crystals are one of the most popular methods of 'focusing' one's arcane powers. They can be planted into wands, staffs and other items to enhance the wielder's abilities, or embedded into crowns or jewellery with similar effects. With its large-scale mining industry Illium was the home of many focus crystals, often stumbled upon in the dark by unassuming miners trying to find gold or silver. They have become exceedingly rare, not to mention illegal, as the Empire has clamped down on the free sale of magical items.
Focus crystals are thought to be forged in the heat and pressure of the ether, slipping through to our realm by methods unknown. They can be powerful, yet incredibly dangerous in the hands of the ignorant or evil.
