Terraforming

Terraforming is the core technology involved in mankind's survival in the stars. While seeking the stars via Zip Drives is all well and good, the technology to turn arid or hostile land into livable farmland that can feed and support Human life was the true birth of colonization. Areas that are terraformed are brought to an ideal rich blend of oxygen-nitrogen concentrates that ends up with a unique scent and taste in the air unfamiliar to most Humans that slowly dissipates over time.

Micro-Terraforming

While the technology to terraform planets exists, it is far more cost effective for settlers to purchase smaller devices that can only terraform plots of land. While this is not ideal and certainly won't provide an atmosphere to an inhabitable planet, it has allowed settlers to create villages and homes on parts of otherwise habitable planets with existing water and atmospheres.
