Cave Bear
It was early spring, while scouting along the eastern the mountain wall, that [Caius] saw his first cave bear. Impressed by its great size and fearful of its teeth and claws, he retired to observe the creature from a good distance away. Kiran Blackwell-Biography of Lord Fenton Caius
Basic Information
Anatomy
The cave bear has a very broad, domed skull with a steep forehead. It has a stout body, with short legs and shaggy brown-gray fur. An omnivore, it has sharp teeth designed to tear into flesh and flat molars to crush plant material.
Dietary Needs and Habits
While the cave bear's diet is largely vegetarian, consuming grasses, roots, berries, and insects, the cave bear will scavenge meat from kills and, when especially hungry, will hunt in the mountain foothills. As with most bears, these hibernate through the winter, necessitating a large store of fat.
Biological Cycle
immediatelycompetitivemales emerge between Astron and Forelithe, taking longer to allow their cubs to gain enough strength to survive in the wild.
After mating season, which generally begins around mid-year's day, the bears focus on gaining as much weight as they can. Some gain over 500 pounds before going into hibernation. Their caves, where they return year after year, are typically located at elevations above 3,500 ft on valley-facing slopes.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
During the winter months, the Cave Bear travels into the mountains to shelter in caves. Often a bear will return to the same cave for its entire life, viciously defending their territory again any who attempt to enter.
During spring-fall, the Cave Bear makes its way into the valley, focusing on building weight for the next winter's hibernation.
