A substance mined from the trees of the Crys. When refined, it acts as a container for
voc, allowing it to be stored and transported away from the
The Vein.
Refinement and Use
Raw crysalline looks and feels very similar to violet-colored, semi-transparent wood. It's incredibly fragile, splintering easily under minimal force, making harvesting and transport difficult. Harvesting, transport, and refinement are overseen by the Geophysics Discipline, who control the mines and foundries with merciless - and sometimes deadly - force. Refinement gives crysalline a smooth, gemlike appearance and a subtle glow. Refined crysalline goes through rigorous inspections before being transferred to the Void Tech Discipline. The slightest flaw in a crysalline core can cause a catastophic power backflow in a void engine, destroying the
voidship it's powering.
Cultural Significance
For most of the people of
Kerekos, crysalline has become a vital aspect of everyday life. With mass production, crysalline is now used for much more than void engines. Street lamps, water purifiers, and vehicles are just a few of the many ways the
League has utilized crysalline cores in everyday life.
On the other hand, the
The Lightless view crysalline as a symbol of their oppression. The mines in the Crys are worked almost exclusively by Lightless slaves. The ten percent that aren't Lightless are criminals serving their sentences with hard labor, resulting in dangerous tensions within the workforce. Although the mine overseers are strict with troublemakers, they have no compassion for their workers and force even the sick or injured to work without pause.
I like how one substance is transferred into other elements of society. Lights, vehicles, etc. But to mine this substance, you need slaves. This creates a moral conundrum.
