The Umbral Hurricane of 1935

By all accounts, this is one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the Islands. There has only been one Umbral Hurricane recorded in history. On the fateful day of the 16th of Hyara, the storm began to form around the edge of Cindorria. Warnings were sent through the islands as quickly as possible. It was too late; a swath of the black umbral water had been pulled up into the sky as the storm formed. The hurricane swept over the islands, leaving large swaths of devastation in its wake. Reports from the time speak of howling winds, trees bent in half, and pieces of wood embedded in other trees. The Temple of Ygharis was moved an entire five feet to the left under the winds of the Umbral Hurricane. The tragedy, however, was in the loss of life that took place after the storm passed. Yet, the people of the Veil once more showed their resilient nature and slowly cleaned up.   Some small villages were forever wiped from the existence of the Islands, and some species were completely gone after the hurricane passed. After this storm, the islands built a more stable warning system, with each island having a storm tower with dedicated watchers. They also began building larger safe places on some of the islands to better protect the people. The Mainland sent many envoys to the islands to aid in repair and restoration.   Today, when visiting the Islands of Veil, there are still some remnants of the storm that passed. Most of it has been taken over by nature in the places that were completely devastated. Many caution against visiting these places for fear of disturbing the dead or catching Umbral sickness that may still cling in pools of water that never dried out.
