Chief of the Boat
Requirements
- Hold the grade of Senior Chief Petty Officer or above
- Have at least Admin-2
- Have at least Streetwise-1
- Have at least Diplomat-1 or Leadership-1
Appointment
The Captain will review the resumes of the senior enlisted assigned to the ship and select one as the COB (Chief of Boat). The selection will be forwarded to the next higher command to be reviewed and approved by both the senior enlisted and Commander at that level.
Duties
The COB represents the enlisted members of the crew of the ship directly to the Captain and XO. While the position holds no direct authority except as derived from the Captain, it is a position of honor and respect. The COB will report on the general morale and welfare of the crew and provide insights as requested by the Captain.
Responsibilities
The COB will interface with all of the senior enlisted leadership of the crew on a daily basis. This is outside of the technical or "business" of the individual leader, but consists of the more soft skill types of activities to ensure the crew is maintaining peak efficiency.
Benefits
The COB is paid as normal for their rank. There are no monetary gains for the position, however, they do wear a special uniform pin designating them as COB. After a successful tour as a COB, they are awarded a ribbon denoting their service and an additional service star for each successive tour.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The COB serves at the pleasure of the Captain. While a Captain can replace a COB at any time for any reason, the crew will observe the circumstances and may or may not approve among the ranks. This can lead to discontent and inefficiencies that any Captain would want to avoid, so they are advised to replace only when necessary.
