Kirk

Government

There is no world government, the diversity and balkanization having led to the downfall of the civilization in the first place. Despite a thriving population, local rulers that might be most closely described as clan leaders, rule over their territory and disputes are common, although weapons are crude and simple.

Defences

The Ranger station is a small station orbiting one of the gas giants and is not visible using the instruments that inhabitants possess. They maintain a small presence to report if any ships land at Kirk (it's not illegal and the world has not been interdicted) and monitor to ensure that the world environment remains stable, but otherwise there is no contact, although any ships that do land are asked to report their activities on a voluntary basis.

History

A world at the edge of the sector, Kirk had been a thriving outpost. Infighting among the various entities attempting to control the world led merchants to become wary of travelling to and trading with Kirk due to the danger. Eventually many insurance companies pulled policies for Captains who made their way to Kirk and the world deteriorated to the point that it had to become self sufficient. With plenty of water and a large landscape with an exotic atmosphere, Kirk focused on maintaining life and other technological research fell off. The inhabitants have adapted and survived, but have regressed to a clan like balkanized political structure and technology has fallen back to TL 2 (equivalent to the age of sail or pre-renaissance).

Points of interest

There is the equivalent of a class D spaceport in the ruins of the previous Class B spaceport, except that there is no repair or refueling capability. It is only possesses a class D rating because spaceborne visitors have been able to effect repairs using equipment and tools found in the ruins. The locals have completely lost the ability to understand or utilize that equipment and without the ability to power it, they have just left it alone.

Tourism

There is no tourism and very little contact with the outside world.
