Kings and Queens are the rulers of their countries, they sit as the final arbiters of almost every governmental matter and often rule via lines of succession. The legitimacy of a monarch such as a King or Queen is often held millitarily but in some cases there is a divine mandate that holds the royalty in it's position.

Qualifications
The primary qualification for a king or queen is that they be part of a royal line of succession. Beyond that individual kingdoms may have other requirements.
Career Progression
Usually a King or Queen starts as a Prince of Princess and ascends to the throne upon the death of the previous monarch. Sometimes a noble may assume the role if their place in the line of succession comes up, as most nobles can claim a place in that line.

Kings and Queens are often tasked with controlling the large sums of money a country has in its coffers, and are otherwise often only ever payed in tribute from their subjects and other monarchs who wish to curry diplomatic favor

King/Queen is considered the highest rank in a Country or Kingdom, the only title which may be considered higher is Emperor or Empress but no such Empires currently exist in Erryt
History
Monarchs have been around for a long time, they are one of the ancient and powerful positions held up in the underpinning of the first world, and even the holdouts of the first world, the Fey, use a monarchy to describe their political structure.

A crown and scepter are usually the markers of a monarch, there are other accoutrements that the position carries but these two things are almost universal.
Workplace
The Monarchy usually operates from a central Palace in the capitol of whatever country they rule. Sometimes they are also called upon to travel to other countries to engage in diplomacy and VERY RARELY anymore are they called upon to head armies in battle.

There are many Hazards to being a monarch. None the least of which is the ambitions of fellow nobles. Usurpation and Revolution are the two major dangers facing monarchs at all times and keeping either or both from happening takes up a lot of the thought of Kings and Queens around the world.
