Rune Moth
A Creature of the Lost Forest
The rune moth is most commonly found in the Lost Forest, but can also be seen in The Forest of the Lowlands and around the Candid Mountains.Anatomy
Traits
The rune moths are large nocturnal moths with brown and yellow or cream colouring. They are powerful fliers with lighter-coloured forewings and darker hindwings. They have stout bodies, large eyes and feathery antennae. They are most easily identifiable by the runic marks on their forewings.
Prey
Rune moths are primary consumers, and as such are close to the bottom of the food chain. They have several features which help them stay safe from the nightbird, the mizzle thrush and the red lark who would gladly call them dinner.Camouflage
The colours of the rune moth are dappled and brown and match the colour of the bark of the yew trees which they call home. The dark colouring allows them to blend in while they sleep during the day.Rune Magic
The runes on their wings act as a form of protection. They have a small amount of natural magic imbued in them. Some act as a form of camouflage, while others instil misdirection. The rarest ones inspire fear in any creature considering eating them.Social Importance
Due to their camouflage and nocturnal habits, rune moths are rarely seen. They are seen as something of an omen from the Gods of The Nomads, and much can read into the rune marking the wings. For example, a moth marked with the home rune may be sending a warning of trouble and need to return.
It is thought to be bad luck to kill a rune moth, but despite this, some may be used as the pendant on a Rune Loop. It is said that a rune loop made from a moth will bring nothing but misfortune to the wearer, but this doesn't stop those desperate enough to make one.
I love them. Don't make jewellery out of them, people! :O I really like that people use the runes on their wings as portents of different things.
