The People of Untameable
Protagonists
Below is a list of the primary protagonists in the first Nomads of The Wilds novel, Untameable, along with links to the character pages.Ivy
Ivy, born Ivy Brummel, is the daughter of the Town Cryer of Cressund Town. She has been brought up to believe that being obedient is a way of showing and earning love. She has five younger siblings; Clarence, Daisy, Alexander, Edward and Rose. When living in Cressund she was often used as the primary carer for them, as well as working four to six hours a day, six days a week, at Mrs Tamsworths' Haberdashery and Seamstress.
Mara
Mara has always been somewhat wild. As a girl she grew up hunting and fighting with her younger brother Dag. She has always had a particular affinity for horses. She joined a new camp in her twenties, which is where she met and fell in love with Ivarr. Their courtship, such as it was, was fast and passionate, and within two moons she was no longer Mara of the Spindles, becoming instead Mara of the Lowlands.
Ivarr
Ivarr lived much of his early life in a permanent camp in the Forest of the Lowlands, but always longed to travel and explore. Before his twentieth birthday he had joined a travelling camp, which would be where he later met Mara. Ivarr is a thinker, considered quiet by some and 'brooding' by those who don't know him. He is as stubborn and determined as his wife.
The Townfolk
The Townfolk all live in one of The Towns in the North West corner of The Wilds. All of the people listed below are from Cressund Town, which is situated closest to The Endless Forest.Mr Thomas Fletcher
Mr Thomas Fletcher has lived in Cressund Town his entire life and as never travelled further than Ralton Town, two towns over, where he went at 16 years old to join the infantry. During training he was discharged due to an injury which left him with a permanent limp. He married Marigold in his twenties, and found a place for himself as a facillitator. He works primarily for Mr Simmons, but is seen as someone who is able to fix things.
Mrs Tamsworth
Eunice always longed to be part of the higher society, and had dreams of marrying well. She learned all of the skills befitting the wife of a lord or nobleman, and was devastated when her father accepted old Mr Tamsworth's marriage proposal on her behalf. Frustrated with her husband's loose purse strings, she set about making life better for herself, using what coin she could take without his knowing to set up her Haberdashery and Sewing shop.
Colin Sullivan
Colin is one of the sons of Mr Stephen Darby Sullivan, a merchant who has made a name for himself trading whiskey and beer from Cosmouth Town. Colin is happy with his position as the third son, as he bears none of the responsibility for following in his father' footsteps. He married Wendy, and has set himself up with a small tavern on the edge of town, where he and his friends are able to drink and have a good time without much interference from anyone.
The Nomads
The Nomads is the name given by the Townsfolk to the tribes who live in The Wilds. The tribes have since adopted it as a badge of honor. They also refer to themselves as 'people of the forests and the hills' which sounds beautiful in their own language, but is a bit of a mouthful in the Common tongue.Hilda
Born in the fens, north of the Candid Mountains, Hilda realised early on that there was a power in words. She spent many years in the North of the Forest In The Beyond, learning how to harness and appy these skills. In her thirties, she joined a travelling camp which was heading south and has spent some time living in both of the southern permenant camps. She has seen a lot in her life and enjoys watching people figure their way through life, offering advice where she can.
Dag
Dag grew up in the shadow of Mara, his older sister, and loved watching her blaze a trail. His early life was not pleasant, and he didn't really find himself and who he was until he was in his early twenties. As a result of his upbringing, he tries to keep his relationships surface level, finding pleasure where he can. But those he lets in he cares about deeply. He will happily interfere in other people's lives in order to help them help themselves.
Njal
Njal grew up watching his mother be Chief Among Equals for a small camp which stuck mainly to the southern areas of The Wilds. He admired her and longed to do the same when he was old enough. He spent two years in the permanent camp in the Lowlands in his late twenties, which is where he met Ivarr. He understands the responsibility of his position and is not foolish enough to believe that he can dictate to those in his camp.
