The Marvel

Summary

  Once every ten years, the peoples of the Wondrous Continent come together for a grand international tournament called The Marvel to demonstrate wits, magic, and muscle. Each nation hosts qualifying competitions in order to determine what champions will enter on their behalf. The tournament is held in neutral territory, the Frosted Wild, which are constantly beset with snow and ice.   For regional leaders, The Marvel is an essential opportunity for diplomacy, and perhaps, espionage. For the common people, The Marvel is a season of celebration. Champions of The Marvel are remembered by history and rewarded with wealth.  

Qualifying Competitions

  Each nation hosts a qualifying tournament, curating an elite entourage of champions to represent them at the Marvel. Each competitor may participate in challenges related to potions mastery, spellcasting, or practiced combat to demonstrate remarkable strength, cleverness, and grace. Tests are commonly tied to natural elements including magical plants, environmental manipulation, etc.

Marvelous Path

The Marvel season is a source of valuable tourism for any city hosting a qualifying competition, in addition to the temporary metropolis that is constructed in the Frosted Wild each decade. Typically, the countries stagger their tournaments based on their travel requirements, with the Scales hosting first (traveling the longest distance) and the Twilight Woods hosting last (traveling the least distance.) Spectators who travel this month-long tournament route are colloquially referred to as traveling the Marvelous Path.
