Lentaine

Lentaine is a rough land, plentiful in it’s expanse but shallow and sparse in resources. It consists of gentle rolling grasslands pocketed by sharp, jutting crags, segmented along it’s reaches by slow, silty rivers. The soil is poor, but still the determined farmer can eek out a subsistence living.
The population is almost entirely human in the plains, with a smattering of dwarves occupying the best crag spires and elves near the coast. Most are poor farmers just trying to get by in the rugged lands. While the surrounding empires through time have squabbled over who exactly owns the lands, no significant military or municipal forces occupy the region, aside from token forts along the perimeter.
It has garnered the nickname “The Spit” because almost all rivers running through the land cross a particularly volcanic series of crags called Volscarpe, or the “Mouth of Pestilence”. While many volcanoes spew life giving enriched soil, for reasons unknown Volscarpe ruins soil which is mixed with it’s ashes, or “Spit”. Many suspect evil magics playing a part. Anyone who consumes or touches the ash grows ill, causing many to assume the crags are cursed.
Banditry was recently the primary threat within “The Spit”. Because the region has a nearly nonexistent law enforcement force, and farmers often put up little to no threat, Lentaine was a favorite resting place for Bandits who collect tithes and rob travelers. They would base in old stone buildings within the crags. From 759 to 770 these bandits ruled Lentaine, but a group of adventurers arrived and broke their stranglehold over the region, allowing the leaders of the region to unify the towns into a fledgling nation.
No trees can grow in Lentaine, so most buildings are created from stone or sod. The people are friendly and generous, but used to slow and predictable lives, and are usually uncomfortable with outsiders. Depression is a large issue in Lentaine, for the substance lifestyle leaves little time for merriment, but once or twice a year they find time to celebrate harvests. The residents take these events very seriously, even the large bandit population knew to stay away.
