A dragon gave a virgin birth creating a new dragon without the bond to protect The Ways. Without this bond, the dragon was free to leave the gate his mother was asigned to and was able to mate with other dragons. These dragons not bound to a gate started to seak out their own lairs, they did however still have the need to protect something so valuable that it is worthy of a dragons protection. This is why they seek treasure and because they often took the treasure from advanced civilizations such as dwarves, they quickly became feared and hated creatures.
