Personal history

Born in 1150, Kaladin was a citizen of a small town in House Sadeas' lands. When he turned 18, he was conscripted into Sadeas' army under General Meridas Ameran, and served for a year, quickly becoming a squad leader within the army. He was last seen in 1169 in a battle in the Tomronto forests helping, during which some of Sadeas' army went to help High Lady Aladar fight against Jah Keved over a territory dispute. Kaladin then appeared in 1171 EOS on a bridge crew under High Lord Sadeas with Reiner at the Betrayal at Four Point Pond, defying the High Lords orders and returning to Dalinar to help him escape from certain death. Kaladin was assigned the rank of captain with Reiner, leading Dalinar's personal guard. This shocked the Kholin court, as that put Kaladin high into the Dahn, even though he is dark eyed.

Kaladin is rumored to be Stormblessed, touched by the Stormfather with enhanced physical abilities with the ability to force luck to favor him. According to the gossip mill, this is the chief reason why he has overcome impossible odds and defeated enemies he shouldn't have been able to defeat.

Motivation

Kaladin is motivated by wanting to prove himself. His anger at the treatment of dark eyes by lights eyes encourages him to prove he's better than light eyes. He is also motivated by what happened to him between 1168 and 1171, almost haunted by it.

Contacts & Relations

Close to Captain Vovrust, the leader of the mounted guard. However the two men are polar opposites: Kaladin is sullen while Reiner is energetic. Kaladin is prone to pessimism, while Reiner is prone to optimism. Kaladin works best under pressure when all is lost, while Reiner makes the most assured way to victory. The two are rarely far apart from one another when off duty, and many among the members of their squad have commented seeing both of them discuss policy, tactics, and schedules in front of the fire when everyone else went to bed, and still discussing things when the crew woke up in the morning.
