Agerian Naming Customs

At most, an Agerian has three names: one from their mother, one from their father, and a last name. If a child is born to a widow or born a bastard, they will only gain mother-name, and only very few commoners have last names, unless their profession becomes one. For example, if Nilya works as a tailor, her last name might be Tailor, and a child can inherit this name. As they later choose their own profession, their last name likely changes unless they follow in their parents' footsteps. If the parents don't have a shared last name, they may decide which one to give their child, but usually the last name comes from the dominating family.
For nobility, their last name often describes where in Ager or the world the family originally comes from. This applies especially to older bloodlines, and for example, L'Ilete translates to, "from the woods," and could well be a last name for a family that originated from woodlands. As there are many families with similar origins, however, names are often more specific: L'Osílete ("from ice woods") is most likely a family from Northern forests.
Of course, last names can follow other customs, as people are raised to nobility and get to choose their own names. Additionally, this honor is sometimes given to a person who originates from abroad and follows their own customs.
